Hello, I’m Dr. Alice Mann — a family physician in Lakeville, MN.
At the age of eight, I received the most powerful gift one can give a child: opportunity. It was at that time when my parents uprooted our family from Brazil and moved to Richfield, Minn., in search of a better future. Growing up here, my parents instilled in me a strong work ethic, as well as the attitude that one does not make excuses, but works hard to find solutions.
It is this kind of outlook that I will bring to the Minnesota House of Representatives.
I am a board certified family practice physician and currently serve patients at Northfield Hospital’s Lakeville Family Health Clinic, located near Lakeville South High School, and also at Northfield Hospital’s Emergency Room. I attended Meharry Medical School in Nashville, Tenn., and completed family practice residency at Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse, Wis. In addition to my medical training, I also graduated with a master’s degree from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
One of my passions is volunteering and providing medical care to impoverished populations around the world. I have worked in Tanzania, Mali, Nicaragua, Haiti, Brazil, as well as spent five months living and working in rural Zimbabwe. Recently, I provided medical care at a Syrian refugee camp and took care of people affected by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.
These experiences, both abroad and here in our community, have provided the background and knowledge to implement policy with both the patient and the provider in mind. I know how great Minnesota can be when given the opportunity.
It is my goal as your State Representative to provide all of our neighbors with that opportunity to thrive.
I currently live in Lakeville with my husband, Elliot, our three young boys and our dog, Pepper.
Vision
HEALTHCARE
An older gentleman recently came to see me in clinic, someone I’ve gotten to know well over the years. As we discussed his medications, he told me that because of the high cost, he had been rationing them, taking them every other day. When it comes to medical care, no one should have to choose between their health and the ability to pay their heating bill.
I believe that everyone should have access to affordable care.
I have experienced what healthcare looks like in developing nations without proper care, and I have experienced what it looks like here in our backyard. I have also been fortunate enough to study at some of the best medical programs in the country. I am not interested in parroting partisan talking points. I am interested in creating policy that can bring real solutions.
EDUCATION
Just like the opportunity given to me as a child, I believe that all of our children, regardless of circumstances, deserve the opportunity for a quality education. Funding education in the Legislature is the greatest investment we can make in our future.
CONSENSUS BUILDING
I believe in respectfully working together and having difficult conversations in order to find solutions. My work in public health is built around working together on issues, regardless of our backgrounds.
AFFORDABLE CHILDCARE
A patient recently walked into my clinic with her toddler for a physical. As we talked, she told me that due to the high costs of childcare, she was forced to quit her job. It is not an isolated event to hear from people that their full-time salary is not enough to cover childcare costs. These stories should not exist. I believe that Minnesotans can come together to make childcare more affordable.
