My name is Samantha Vang and I am a lifelong Minnesota native, progressive democrat, and a longtime Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center resident. Twenty five years ago, my parents arrived to Minnesota as refugees.
From putting progressive leaders into office to increasing civic engagement, I have been on the grounds working hard to mobilize various districts across the Twin Cities for nearly a decade. My proudest work involves establishing a civic engagement coalition in which I helped over 6,600 people vote, often for the very first time.
I have advocated at the legislature to fight on issues regarding the Equal Rights Amendment, racial equity, women’s rights, gun violence prevention legislation, healthcare access, immigration issues, voter accessibility, the 2020 Census, and data disaggregation.
Like you, my family and I have grown with this district: I graduated from Armstrong High School and am the first in my family to graduate from a four-year college at Gustavus Adolphus; my parents are homeowners and union members; and my sister is a elementary teacher in our public school district. With you, we have invested our time and resources to ensure our neighborhoods are kept safe, our small businesses flourish, and our schools have an enriching environment for students and teachers.
Policies should be made from the ground up and with my local roots and your support, we can create change and thrive in House District 40B.
My primary goals:
Equity in Education
I will look to implement effective strategies that include access to quality early education, teacher support, increased school funding, holistic approaches to comprehensive education, and safe and suitable school environments.
Stronger Labor and Economic Development
In addition to protecting unions, we must work to close the work skills gap, foster small business growth, invest in inclusive outreach, support long-term sustainable jobs and local hiring, and create more cradle-to-career opportunities.
Attainable Homeownership
Homeownership is generational wealth building, community building, and a source of stability for families. I will work to provide more paths to homeownership, especially for low-income and minority families. Together, we must implement strategies that allow our neighbors and neighbors-to-be access to affordable homes, whether or not that requires us to demystify the process or reform credit standards.
Environmental Justice
We must work to sustain the land, parks, and air in which we live and occupy as to reduce pollution and increase environmental consciousness. As state representative, I will continue to invest greatly in clean air, clean water, renewable energy, bees, and public infrastructure to improve our shared quality of life.
