Issues I Care About

Sarah Hamlin/2018 Candidate for MN State Representative District 30A

Sarah Hamlin

2018 Candidate for MN State Representative District 30A
DFL

I’m Sarah Hamlin and I running for the Minnesota House of Representatives in the Elk River and Big Lake District 30A.  I have lived in Minnesota my whole life and I would be proud to represent my community members in our state legislature.

My husband, Dave, is a teacher in the Elk River school district and we have been married since 1998. We have 5 children, three of whom were adopted.

I believe I am the right candidate for the House seat because as a licensed social worker with Main Street Family Services, I work with families everyday. I know the struggles children and families face. I believe we should be supporting children and families in every way possible. I believe we should be supporting both K-12 education as well as higher education. And, I believe we need to support the small businesses in our community because they provide jobs and keep our community thriving.

Top Issues

*I support affordable healthcare for all

*I support access to quality mental health services for all

*I support a livable wage

*I support decreasing the dependency on welfare through livable wage, affordable higher education and technical degrees

*Although I believe dangerous people should not have access to guns, I support the second amendment

*I support transparency in our elected officials and the legislative process

*I support term limits for all elected officials

*I would love to hear from you about what matters to you and your family!

Issues I care about

We need to support children and families, education and small business. These are all areas I have personal experience in. I know what parenting while working or going to school entails. I know what it is like to have college debt and I have been a small business owner for the majority of my adult life.

Education

For every $1 in education funding our current Republican lead legislature gives $15 in tax breaks to corporate special interest.

It is time for our representation to step up and promote fair, equitable funding for our schools. As your representative I will fight for every penny we need to make our schools the best in the state.  Our children are our future, let’s give them the opportunity to be the best they can be!

With the present system in place, higher education just isn’t always affordable. Student loans are now out of control for most!

Speaking from experience as a mom and current college student,  I will fight to make higher education affordable for those who wish to build a solid future through lifetime learning.

Children and Families

Dr. Lillian G. Katz, Professor Emerita at the University of Illinois and leader in early childhood education says:

“Each of us must come to care about everyone else’s children. We must recognize that the welfare of our children and grandchildren is intimately linked to the welfare of all other people’s children. After all, when one of our children needs lifesaving surgery, someone else’s child will perform it. If one of our children is threatened or harmed by violence, someone else’s child will be responsible for the violent act. The good life for our own children can be secured only if a good life is also secured for all other people’s children.”

Transportation

I support a smart transportation package. We need safe roads and bridges, but we also need a public transportation system that works for our district.

Small Business

Because I have several years experience as a small business owner, I recognize the challenges that owners face. I will fight for small business interests in St. Paul.  Small businesses are vital to our communities. We need to support legislation that allows small businesses to thrive.

I’m asking for your vote in November because as a social worker I work collaboratively with families and professionals every day. I know how to be a leader when I need to be and I know how to work with others to get things done. We don’t need more finger pointing and blaming at the capital we need more teamwork and progress. I know I can do that for you and with you!
